We got up quite early but were still a little rushed getting ready for our pre-booked tour of the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. When we got to the Metro stop, we asked a lady on her way out where there might be a public bathroom. She said they’re not really obvious and there weren’t any around there; then she offered to take us into her office building and let us use the facilities! We also talked about getting a coffee and she said Maccas was just around the corner and, of course, they have a restroom – we had just met our second angel!
We used the very dirty, unattended Maccas toilets and then walked up towards the Vatican; our instructions for the Museum and Sistine Chapel tour were very vague and it took a while to work out where to go and what to do; we thought we the booking included a guide, but it was just the audio guide, so we walked the 2 hours through the museums listening to the commentary. It was all rather overwhelmingly ornate; the collections were extraordinary and opulent. The Egyptian artifacts were probably our favourite – dating from the first millennium BC, so old, yet still enthralling, many either glued together or restored to their original state. The tour finished in the Sistine Chapel. I have to say that I found it underwhelming to say the least. Small and dripping with paintings, many of which are familiar. However, the colours I found gaudy.
We had lunch in the cafeteria, bought some little items and then went outside to see what the queues were like for St Peter’s. Well, they looked like about 1.5 hours’ worth of waiting. It was hot, we were tired, so we thought we’d come back tomorrow, hopefully with less heat!

We worked our way back home, becoming more confident on the transport system. Some local produce and stores from a local supermarket and then homeopened our door coming out – carrying groceries. Our third angel arrived – he was just coming out of the apartment building door as we came in, so we didn’t have to hunt or keys. Dinner was delicious – aranchino, salad, soup and vegies! Early to bed so we can walk again tomorrow.
