A huge day today. We arrived pretty much on time at Fumicello aiport, found a ticket machine and bought a ticket for the Leonardo express train to Roma. With the bags and the distance we settled for a taxi to our AirBnb; our hostess, Francesca, met us at the building and gave us a quick tour of instructions. We bought a Walking Tour of Rome by Night, partly because it would keep us awake until a regular bedtime hour; after settling in, we had some lunch of food leftovers from the plane. Then we walked up to St John Lateran, following instructions from Francesca; it was so good to finally see it in the flesh and we were in time for 5.30pm Mass. Of course it was in Italian but we were able to understand most prayers, except for the homily!
The walking tour was really enjoyable, learning the history
behind lots of monuments, statues, churches and palaces. A real highlight was
the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini in Piazza Navona.
The other couple on the tour left us then, so just the two of us continued with the guide, first to the Trevi Fountain – suddenly finding ourselves in a very big crowd, some pushing and shoving. We managed to through a coin into the fountain, provided by our guide. Last stop was the Spanish Steps; by then we were both pretty tired, as it was after 10. Roger got us onto the right Metro to get back home and we settled gratefully into our first good night’s sleep.
